Between a Broken Heart and a Caged Heart is a meditation on emotional rupture and restraint, articulated through bold chromatic divisions and assertive painterly gesture. The composition is organized around opposing zones of color—intense reds, deep greens, and grounded ochres—held in a state of uneasy coexistence. These competing fields register inner conflict: passion set against containment, vulnerability pressed against control.

Gestural brushstrokes and circular forms punctuate the surface like emotional pressure points, while linear interruptions introduce sensations of barrier, enclosure, or passage. A ladder-like vertical element suggests ascent or escape, yet its confinement within the pictorial field sustains the tension between desire and limitation. Color functions symbolically as well as structurally: red carries emotional intensity and pain, green signals endurance and restrained growth, and yellow anchors the work in lived experience.

Executed in a contemporary expressive abstraction, the painting resists literal narration in favor of a psychological landscape.
